I wasn't going to post, but, look, I did, and all because of the damned school bus, but that's not all I posted

A bit after 1:00 AM, I forced myself away from my Kivgiq take, where I had been editing Kalukaq pictures. I realized I was very tired and, as I have put this blog on sporadic mode for just such occassions, thought I would just go straight to bed.

But then I got to thinking about the school bus. I wanted to see how it came out. And then I figured I might as well show the school bus to any readers who are still with me and any stragglers who might wander in.

Obviously, this is not the school bus.

This is my back yard, shortly after breakfast. Breakfast was oatmeal, with apple chunks, walnuts and cinnamon.

This is the school bus.

And here is a hitchhiker. I didn't pick her up. I wasn't going very far and it wouldn't have done her much good if I had. I used to pick up just about every hitchhiker I came across. I tend not to now, but sometimes it feels right and I still do.

This is the same corner. Hmmm... this auction is tomorrow. Maybe I should go. And it fits right into the national discussion at the moment.

Looks like one person walking...

...but actually it's two.

I'm thankful for the school bus which caused you to blog as I enjoyed the pictures and your humor. Your backyard looks so peaceful. Hope you had a view of it while enjoying your oatmeal. Have a good weekend.

Interested to see that none of the kids coming off the school bus are properly dressed for winter weather. I thought that only our kids in the south are that ignorant; here they go to school in T-shirts in the snow. Depressing to see that even in the homeland of winter kids are too cool and too invincible to take care of themselves. (I bet they don't dress like this on the North Slope.)

checking in from Germany...spring doesn't want to come here either

Alaska resembles Colorado this morning, but no one is out driving here this morning. Roads are closed and drifts are getting higher and higher. Can barely see across the street. 15 degrees F with wind chills around 0. Kids are disappointed it came on Saturday so not "missing" any school! Bad thunderstorms in the southeast....may have tornadoes. I'd rather have a blizzard...can shovel after it goes away.....tornadoes leave permanent damage. This time of year, the sun does a lot of the work!

Rebecca - that's one of the things I like most about living in this house. I can sit on the couch or in my reclining chair, eat my oatmeal and drink my coffee while I look out on that backyard. And sometimes, as I eat, moose wander through. They do not recognize it as my backyard, to them, it is another piece of their own home.

Kathy - I have seen kids get on and off school buses wearing short pants and t-shirts in Barrow when the real, genuine, ambient temperaturre - never mind windchill - has been in the -50's.

Good to hear from you Twain - and all the way from Germany!

Mrs. Gunka, apparently, tornadoes do sometimes occur in Alaska, but they are a real rarity. Earthquakes, however, volcanoes, gigantic land slides, avalanches and such are not.

I guess the big thing that separates us right now from all those in more southerly latitudes who are being hit with snow and cold right is down there folks seem to talk about what a long, cold, snowy, winter it has been and will spring ever come, while up here we are marveling about what a warm, mild, winter it has been - and so little snow has fallen - and all the signs point to an early spring.

That doesn't mean spring will be early, but it has been looking that way.
