The Daily School Bus: parked outside as the sunless days draw near

This being Saturday, I haven't seen any buses rolling and I don't think I'm going to, but I did see these buses parked by the high school. Barrow is three days away from the final sunrise/sunset of the year 2013.

The Daily School Bus: they blow their horns

Whenever they pull up to a stop to pick up students, school buses in Barrow blow their horns. The sound reminds me a bit of the complaint of an unhappy cow, but louder and with a bit of hoarseness in the throat. On school mornings, these honks are heard repeatedly throughout Barrow.

A pretty decent little wind blows this morning. A fine, light, snow flies and swirls its way down the roads. Excluding wind chill, it is warm. Generally speaking, it does not snow when it is cold. It has to get warm before it can snow.

The Daily School Bus: the forecast storm has arrived

As Arctic storms go it is not terribly fierce, not nearly so bad as the one I just missed over the weekend, but it is a bit blizzardy and it could get worse. It is expected to last for a couple of days.

The Daily School Bus: I see only one today -A storm might be coming but that's not why

A little bit of snow was flying around and I heard there was a storm coming. It looked and felt like it could happen, but so far it hasn't got here yet. This was the only school bus I saw on the road – about 3 PM. It turned out today was teacher in-service day and so the students had all gone home early. I'm not sure why this one was out when the others weren't, but it was.

Climate Change and Environmental Stewardship Study, Number 4: Bacardi in Ice, Day 4: Dusted in snow

Before I continue any further I must note that today's study got corrupted a bit – thanks to the combined influence of weather and two of my grandsons. Early this afternoon, I observed a very few light snowflakes falling in my backyard."This will be perfect for my study!" I thought. I could photograph the Bacardi bottle with just a smattering of snowflakes spread about the frozen surface of the glass. This would provide invaluable information regarding both climate change and environmental stewardship.

Then, just as I was getting ready to head for the bottle, the snow suddenly started falling more heavily. Kalib and Jobe spotted the falling flakes and dashed out the door. Study or no study, I could not just leave my grandsons to play in the snow alone.

So I took my iPhone and went out and frolicked with them and produced the beginning to the snow series I posted earlier this day. Then, instead of walking, I drove to the bottle, but now there was more than just a smattering of flakes across its surface. I would never get that first smattering of flakes on frozen glass. So I shot the bottle just as you see it here, then went back home and shot a few more of the boys playing in the snow.

I hope this doesn't destroy my study altogether. I fear it might.
