The horses are just too damn smart!

Well, regular readers have seen everything that appears on this post many times, but that's how the day was - routine, a hard working day at my office with books and computer, where I took no pictures, and three little breaks where I ventured outside the house.

It began when I woke up for good at 9:30 AM. I was a little irrirated with myself, because I had wanted to be at Abby's right when they opened at 9:00, but I didn't feel too bad about it because I had only gotten maybe five hours sleep. I remote started the car, got dressed, ran a comb worthessly through my hair and then went to the car.

As you can see, we had experienced another warm night and so more snow had fallen - not a lot more snow, just a little bit.

In my opinion, we need a lot more. I just wish it would stay off our wood pile. We had some tarps on the stacked piles, but the tarps blew away. Now the wood is uncovered.

And here I am, at Abby's. Margie, of course, is in town babysitting Lynx. If she were here, I would have probably had oatmeal for breakfast, or maybe Cheerios, but she is gone. I did not want to eat alone in a cold house and I did not want to wait to eat until after I had built a fire and given the house time to warm up, so I went to Abby's.

I felt pretty groggy and dull headed - but Martina poured a hot cup of coffee, eggs, ham, patotoes and multi-grain toast with some of Abby's homemade jam came and pretty soon I felt a lot better - still groggy and dull-headed, but a lot better just the same.

From then until a bit after 3:00 PM, I nailed myself down to work. I stayed away from the internet, too - from Facebook, Burn, New York Times, NPR Picture Show and all the sites I like to visit. I love them all, but they are too disruptive. So I have cut all internet out from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM - unless it is legitimate work, like doing research, making this blog - that kind of thing.

It is kind of hard to do, because whenever I get frustrated, I tend to want to escape for a minute or two into the net, but that minute or two can easily become 15, or even 30. If this happens too often, it adds up to a lot of time.

So I stayed off the internet all day until right now, when I started this blog post about 10:30. Once I finish it, I have one more task to do, which should take about an hour. Then it will be midnight. Then I can roam around and play on the net for awhile - visit all my favorite sites. I just can't stay too long or I will never go to bed.

The net can be my greatest ally and my worst enemy. I must do away with the enemy part.

I would suggest you do the same, but if you do, you might cut my blog out and I don't want you to.

But anyway, a bit after 3:00 PM, I took my coffee break. Barista Elizabeth leaves at the end of this week to join her military husband in Germany. We won't be seeing her anymore.

This is Kristina, who is taking her place.

And here is Carmen, opening a box.

"Where the hell you been, Bill?" the Mahoney horses shouted in unison at me as I drove home from coffee the long way. "We thought you died!"

"Listen!" I shouted back. "I got the radio on and right now there is a story about how they ship horses from the US to Canada, where they are butchered and sent to Europe as steaks! So you be careful what you say to me!"

The black horse up front just laughed, derisively.

"Hell, Bill! You be careful what you say to us or we'll cut you up, put you in 42 different freezer boxes and send you to Portland!"

I can never win an argument with these guys.

When I was 16, I went to Idaho to work on the cattle ranch of my aunt and uncle. Mostly, I bucked hay, but occassionally they put me on a horse and sent me out to chase cows around.

I discovered real fast that the horse was smarter than me.

And so the horse remains.

The light was actually dimmer than it looks here. The camera just read the low light as if it were regular light. I tried to dim it in Lightroom and Photoshop to make it look the way it was, but when I got it right it looked kind of grody, so I said, what the heck, and let the camera win.

I just took this. Just now - after I had already placed the other pictures in this post. As you can see, the weather is still warm. It is snowing a little bit again. They say it will snow six to 12 inches, but I'll bet we don't get more than three.

For some reason, snow can pile up all over the place not far away and do little more than dust us.

Very warm for this time of the year in the CA desert as well. We have been in the 70's and high 60's this last month. Crazy.
