Logbook Photo Store - prints (all made by, signed, and dated by the photographer)

Malik Says Goodbye

In October of 1988, three gray whales got stuck in the sea ice not far from Point Barrow. A phenomenal, two-week rescue effort ensued. The world watched tensely as industry and military applied their best brains and highest technology to the rescue, but it was Eskimo hunters with chainsaws who proved most effective. Malik, perhaps the most successful harpooner of his time, bonded with the whales and provided expertise and leadership. In a moment the likes of which had never happened before and likely never will again, the harpooner said goodbye to the whales. The Soviet icebreakers were approaching, shattering the ice before them as they came. Everyone else had left but Malik and me.

I am considering adding a new print from the rescue each month until I get maybe a dozen that highlight the major moments. Or maybe I will make it just this one. I haven't decided for sure.

Big Miracle, a major motion picture and a delightful family film, tells a fictional story based very loosely on the event. This blog tells a true story: the one that happened in front of me.

Walrus on Chukchi Sea Ice

In the summer, usually in early July or late June, the ice breaks away from the shore near Barrow and drifts out to sea with the east wind. When the wind shifts to the west, the ice comes back and brings with it seals, walrus and other animals vital to the Iñupiat of the Arctic Slope.

Eldest Son - Wasilla, Alaska

It was late afternoon in mid-October when I went walking with my son and his dog in Wasilla. For some reason, probably to photograph something, I lingered at the bottom of the hill.

Then I looked up the hill and saw him stepping into the glow of the street light.

Jobe hunts for eggs

It was Easter Sunday, 2012. Jobe went to hunt Easter Eggs. He got his share, but then found something even better - a big puddle.

Be sure to pass on the right

In India, just like in the UK, the law mandates that traffic drive on the left. So, whenever you see an elephant traveling ahead of you in your direction, be certain to pass it on the right.

This is the highway going north to Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan - the land of kings.

Logbook Photo Store: cat section.

Uncle Clyde and kitty Royce

I have a plethora of cat pictures - cats who live or have lived with us; cats from all over Alaska; cats from about 26 states and a few Canadian territories and provinces; cats from Russia, the UK, India.

One of our first cats was Clyde, who came as a kitten-gift to Caleb from a highschool girlfriend. Clyde was as naughty and bad as a cat could be, but he was sweet, too, and boy, did he love kittens. He couldn't father any himself, but he was an Uncle to all.

As for Royce, in his old age, he became an uncle to Kalib, whom he loved dearly.

I will post a new cat photo from time to time. I don't really believe that there are many people out there who will be willing to pay $300 for even a fine art 13 x 19 print of a cat. I considered lowering the price to something people might pay, but that felt like an insult to cats. I do not want to insult cats.

So maybe I won't sell any 13 x 19 cat prints.  If I don't, well, okay. If I do, good for me, and good for the buyer. Maybe I won't even sell any 11 x 14's. I hope I sell some 8 x 10's, anyway.

Maybe I will add dogs and horses into the mix at some point. I've got plenty of dogs and a fair number of horses. Fish, too. A lizard here and there - other critters as well.

But for me, the cat is at the top. Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway knew this. I know it, too. And so does the cat.

Prices: 13 x 19 Velvet Fine Art Print - $300, 11 x 14, Heavy Weight Matte Print - $150. 8.5 x 11 Print, Matte - $50. Shipping and handling, $7.00.

Logbook Photo Store -The daily take

I Wish It Were Me Up There

April 15, 2012

I carry a camera with me always, and every day I photograph at least one thing. Although I know there will be days when I do not succeed at posting one in the photo store, this will be my goal. I photographed this one earlier today while walking on Gail.

I will give myself some latitude and will allow myself to include any image taken within a week of the present day, should it seem appropriate. I will leave each daily take photo up for two weeks only and then take it down. If nobody buys one in that time, it's okay. I don't really expect most of them to sell, but if one or two does now and then, great.

Prices: 13 x 19 Velvet Fine Art Print - $300, 11 x 14, Heavy Weight Matte Print - $150. 8.5 x 11 Print, Matte - $50. Shipping and handling, $7.00.

Raven flies at breakup time

April 16, 2012

This character is pretty smart. I know it, because it's a raven - so it's smart. In a contest, tt will outsmart you. It will outsmart me.

A raven even outsmarted Albert. Albert Einstein, that is. Showed him that relativity was not so relative, after all.

It Must Be Spring

As I drove down Spruce, I saw small groups of high school aged runners coming by. It must be spring. It must be track season.

Logbook Photo Store: Studies of the Young Writer - print series

The Young Writer, Study # 2892

"She stirs my coffee."

The young writer, Shoshana, just turned 21. She was 19 when she first went to work for Carmen at Metro Cafe and that was when I began to shoot my studies of her, which have become famous throughout the universe. This is the most recent. Being the last, it is now the first in an ongoing series of prints to be released as seen fit - all will come with a line or two of the Young Writer's writing.

All Young Writer Studies are numbered according to whatever number first falls into the photographer's head when he makes them.

Logbook Photo Store - Electronic photo books (pending)

Fat Cat: Lost on the Yukon - and other wild, true, cat tails from across Alaska

When my daughters were small, they gave me a mission: to photograph whatever cats I found during the many travels that took me away from home and to learn what I could of their stories and then report back to them. This will be my first electronic book and it will feature cats from every region of Alaska.

It will begin with the story of Fat Cat, who jumped out of this boat right after we landed in Circle after traveling upriver from Fort Yukon. Fat Cat promptly disappeared. We searched and searched, but could not find her.

We then drove off into the light night of summertime Interior Alaska, feeling lost and alone.

Price to be determined.

Thomas and Kalib - the little boy who loves him

Regular readers of Logbook and my earlier blog, Wasilla, Alaska by 300 and Then Some, know how intent Kalib gets when he falls in love with something, be it Royce, the orange cat, a spatula and now Thomas the Train.
