Kalib at 5 years old - it's all about trains; the cake wound up on the floor
When we arrived to celebrate Kalib's fifth birthday, he was watching a movie - about a train - The Polar Express. He was into it, too. He did not want to be disturbed by a birthday party.
Even so, knowing his grandma would want to spend time with him, he sat down between her and his mom. He did not take his eyes off The Polar Express. He kept a little wooden train tucked tight into his belly.
Shortly thereafter, he was on the floor, playing with the little wooden train.
This did not mean he lost interest in the train movie. He didn't.
Finally, though, the movie had to be paused so the cake could be lit and Kalib could blow out the candles. His mom carried it towards him as little brother, Jobe, scooted happily alongside.
Kalib sat on a chair, hiding under a blanket. Things happened real fast after this...
Kalib suddenly poppied out from under the blanket and blew the candles out so swiftly, I barely managed to get off this frame. Excited and hungry, he then jumped up, took hold of the cake from beneath and, scurrying faster than his mom who he was helping, took three steps toward the kitchen, where the cake would be cut. The candles were all out now. There was very little light. Kalib suffered a mishap.
The cake flew out of his hands and landed frosting side down on the rug. Lynxton hustled over to investigate. In all his days, it was the worst calamity he had ever witnessed.
The remains of the cake were scooped up with a spatula and carried into the kitchen. A few minutes later, I wandered in and found the cake, frosted, cut, ready to be eaten.
"You refrosted the cake already?" I spoke in astonished admiration.
"We didn't make new frosting," Melanie answered. "We just recycled the old."
Whatever, it was good.
Next, it was time for Kalib to receive his gifts.
Of course, he got a new train engine. On Christmas, he and Jobe and Lynxton all got trains, of different kinds, shapes and sizes. His mom reported Kalib played with them all today, going back and forth from the cheapest little ones to the new HO railroad.
This train mania has been going on for three years now. Someday, I suppose, it will end. Kalib will move on to other things.
We adults will all be sad.
But then maybe someday he will drive a train. Maybe he will be an engineer. Maybe when he is my age, his house will be full of model trains, clicking and clacking their way through a myriad of bridges, tunnels, winding from room to room, as his own grandkids watch in awe.
Maybe. Maybe not.
I will never know.

Glad the cake could be rescued
I can't believe Kalib is 5! What beautiful cake and what beautiful children.
Kalib my be the engineer on an advanced bullet train when he is your age!!! He will take his grand kids on a fast ride! And they will have birthday cake but he won't trip when he's older. What a wonderful family with a budding train engineer! Thanks Bill.
