Chillin' down; Tim, Tim and the cowboy cup; kid bikes across pond
Yes - same old, same old: Got up this morning and I did not want to cook, nor did I want to eat cold Cheerios with cold milk alone inside a cold house. Sure - I could have built a fire first thing, but the way this new green, clean, energy-efficient, wood stove works it takes a while to heat the house up. Apparently, the stove takes the first couple of hours worth of heat and stores it for later - which is okay at dinner time but not so great at breakfast.
So yes, I headed for Abby's. It was seven degrees outside (-14 C). It didn't matter. As soon as I stepped inside, Abby poured me one of her famous cups of breakfast coffee. Then I had ham, eggs and hashbrowns - again - I can't say it too many times - the best hash browns I have ever had at any restaurant, anywhere.
I love having breakfast at Abby's.
I just love it.
Tomorrow, I had better stay home and have Cheerios.
Or maybe oatmeal.
That's what I will do - Cheerios or oatmeal!
Or Abby's...
I arrived about three minutes after opening time, but there were already a few customers who had come in ahead of me, including Tim - who, to my surprise, was drinking his coffee from the cowboy cup normally reserved for Tim. I wondered what would happen if Tim came in and discovered Tim was drinking out of his cup?
Well... no more than a few minutes passed by before Tim did come in and took a seat on a stool two stools to the left of Tim's stool.
I held my breath. Then Tim ordered a cup of coffee which Abby served to him in a regular brown cup.
As it turned, Tim was okay with Tim drinking from his cowboy cup.
Tim and Tim have known each other for a long time. They both ride horses and have good dogs.
Andy said it was getting chilly outside.
"Seven degrees," I said.
"It was five at our house," Andy said.
Come time to leave, I stood up, put my jacket back on. "Goodbye Abby, goodbye Andy, goodbye Tim, goodbye, Tim," I said.
All responded in kind.
As usual, at four in the afternoon, I took my coffee break and bought an Americano at Metro. I drank it in the car and as I did, I passed this kid who pedaled his bike across a frozen pond.
It could go below zero (below -18 C) tonight.
Maybe we will have a sub-zero Halloween this year. Near and sub-zero Halloweens used to be common when we first moved out here, but then they became uncommon. When the time came, no matter how cold, our kids were just as eager as kids anywhere to get into their costumes and go out trick-or-treating.
In those days of cold Halloweens, there were always a lot of kids out trick-or-treating, knocking on our door.
In the more recent times of warmer Halloweens, the flow of trick-or-treaters has been cut to a trickle. Last year - no more than ten; probably less than ten.
So maybe we will have a cold Halloween again.
Or maybe it will be 50 degrees, pouring rain, perhaps driven by 80 mph winds.
