The iPhone makes light of what is in front of me

I did not take my daily walk today, so I'm taking a walk this evening. In truth, it is notably darker than it appears to be in this photo, although there is light. If you leave the iPhone to figure out its own exposure, it will take a scene such as this, zero in on the road and try to expose it so the road appears as though you had shot it in daylight. If I had been quick enough and had tapped the screen by the headlights I could have gotten a more accurate exposure, but the car came by, I pulled my iPhone out of my pocket, raised it and shot, just like that. I did darken this a bit by using the Sutro filter, but still the scene appears lighter than it was.
